IN PLACE
This book explores my experience of place in relation to stillness and movement during the pandemic. The book’s lyrical text and photographs suggest that paying close attention to details in the world around us can provide us with both perspective and a sense of growth, change, and movement… even when our lives and communities are missing the motion and activity that we are accustomed to.

IN PLACE
In place
In this place
In place of the lives we were living
In place of the dreams we had
In place of all we thought we might become
We remained in place
In this place
where we have sheltered
have waited
waited for safety
waited for the world to heal
waited for life to begin again.
Yet this place
is not a static thing
It is more than the ground beneath our feet
the way our lives have always been
Place is the wind,
a rippling movement through prairie grass
place is the sky,
with clouds gathering overhead
place is the river,
ever changing
even while our lives
have remained still,
remained in place.
And now our stillness gives way
to movement once again,
and our lives can be the sky
the wind
the river
always becoming
In place of where we’ve been
waiting in stillness
sheltering in place
in place of this long strange lost year.
